About LEAN

LEAN was founded to help Louisiana citizens change the balance of power and challenge the insanity of continued economic and ecological suicide as practiced Lousiana-style. By empowering more than one hundred grassroots, community organizations, and countless individuals, LEAN has already helped in gaining a tremendous foothold in the war to make Louisiana's communities safer, healthier places to live. LEAN's expanded efforts will allow the progress already made to continue.

LEAN's Mission:

The purpose of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) is to foster cooperation and communication between individual citizens and corporate and government organizations in an effort to assess and mend the environmental problems in Louisiana. LEAN's goal is the creation and maintenance of a cleaner and healthier environment for all of the inhabitants of this state.

LEAN's Constituency:

LEAN is a statewide network of 106 member groups and 1700+ individual members. LEAN works to improve the environment for the benefit of all of the citizens of Louisiana.

LEAN's Structure:

LEAN is a statewide umbrella group with many member groups that it has helped to organize. LEAN provides these member groups, as well as individual citizens, with the support and resources required to accomplish their environmental goals.

The LEAN network continues to win for the people, in the courts, in the legislature, and in the media:

Because we are well-informed and dedicated to grassroots environmental activism.	Because we bring strength of numbers to a leadership role in advocating for environmental protection and environmental justice.
Because we represent an ever increasing dynamic force willing to speak on behalf of the environment in crucial situations.	Because our allies are committed to supporting this work with enthusiasm, time, and money.

In the last year, the LEAN network has been in the forefront of environmental activism in Louisiana:

Working with citizens' groups to develop, implement, protect, and enforce legislative and regulatory environmental safeguards.	Publishing the monthly Environmental Watch newsletter, and continuing to develop the LEAN website.
Supporting grassroots organizations across the state who are fighting dozens of environmental battles such as the proposed landfill in Alsen/North Baton Rouge, the proposed Shintech PVC facility to be located in Iberville Parish, burning of Napalm in Louisiana and helped give technical assistance to dozens of groups preparing for permit hearings in their parishes.	Coordinating the LEAN People's Conference at which LEAN members gather for fellowship, education, and solidarity.
	Holding press conferences and sending out releases to inform the public of vital environmental issues and call governmental leaders to account.
